This distillery is one of five local craft distilleries to join forces with BC Distilled for their 2021 PADS fundraiser. Okanagan Spirits has produced an unquestionably unique distilled drink with partial proceeds going towards PADS, while Summit Labels has produced and covered 100% of all label costs associated with the initiative, helping provide greater support for those with disabilities.
A Little Bit of Background
Okanagan Spirits dates back to 2004 as BC’s oldest and original craft distillery. It is family-owned and operated with two locations in both Kelowna and Vernon. Before opening, there weren’t many true, authentic, terroir-driven distilleries in British Columbia. So, this family saw an opportunity to do something different. Their story lies at the heart of their business. With strong links to their environment and agricultural community, they strive to tell the story of the Okanagan Valley through their spirits, delivering a genuinely personalized BC experience.
The Star of the Show
The team at Okanagan Spirits was on board with the fundraiser right from the start! When BC Distilled reached out, they immediately knew it was right up their ally and saw a challenge to craft an out-of-the-box, one-of-a-kind product. This product comes in the form of a custom single cask double-wood whiskey, finished in a mezcal barrel, also known as their limited edition Cinqo de Mayo whiskey.
Tyler, the CEO of Okanagan Spirits and his twin sister Melissa, were born on May 5th, making this whiskey a fun ode to their birthday and the classic Mexican celebration. The inspiration stems from the siblings’ love for the sun and frequent surf trips to Mexico (pre-covid, of course). The team thought in a year without travel due to the pandemic would be a great idea to bring people to the tropics since they can't go there themselves. The specialty spirit is a beautiful representation of a whiskey meets mezcal. The whiskey is incredibly smooth with sweet honey notes, while the mezcal finish brings an exquisite smokey aspect to the drink. It is an all-around great marriage (think a Chrissy Teigen and John Legend type of union. Rock solid). Designed to transport you and your tastebuds to a tropical paradise.
